It is typical to expect the conventional Hard Disk Drives (HDD) to reach or surpass the five-terabyte mark since these mechanical drives have been doubling or tripling in capacities for years. The revolutionary Solid State Drives, however, seems to follow a bit different trend.
For one, while solid state drives are remarkably faster than HDDs, they are offered in much smaller capacities. The largest consumer-friendly SSD drives that most of us are familiar with are the 500Gb SSD drives and the 1Tb SSD drives.
Samsung had recently broken the record when they unleashed the first ever SSD drive to have surpassed the 10Tb mark—the Samsung PM1633a. The technology behind this new line of SSD is not new. Intel has been exploiting 3D V-NAND technology and is planning to release their 10Gb SSD drive.
Most solid state drives, especially those reaching high capacities such as the 1Tb SSD and 500Gb SSD drives we are most accustomed of, requires much energy. It seems that the energy expenditure of SSD drives utilizing the conventional NAND (negative-AND) flash memory increases as the capacity increases.
This 16Tb SSD drive from Samsung, however, cuts energy consumption by as much as 30%. This reduction in the energy expenditure results in a 30% reduction in thermal output. With this new technology, SSD drives can also achieve read and write speeds of up to 1200MB/s. Compared to conventional solid state drives, SSD benchmark tests reveal that Samsung PM1633a is twice as fast as most SSDs.
With this new storage capacity at a speed we have never experienced before, we can now store much information into a single drive at the convenience of our home, at twice the access speed we are used to.
As what we have observed with most of Solid State Drives, as the capacity increases so is the price (as found with most 1Tb SSD and 500 Gb SSD drives). Samsung PM1633a’s main drawback is that it is, as of the moment, offered at a whopping $10,000.
If you do not have as much money to spare, or not as enthusiastic as most, you will have to contend with your usual SSD-HDD hybrid drives for capacity or your cloud-based storage. Still, the 16Tb Solid State Drive from Samsung gives us the image of what future may hold—a future where Terabyte is the new norm for storage capacity.
